Imaginary Conversations and Remembering Your Groove Thang

Rest. Relaxation. Reflection.

If I’m being honest, I’ve been laying low for quite some time now, trying to rest, recharge, and find my fancy groove thang once again. Trying to remember the ins and outs of what makes me come alive and why fostering that is so important. Because you see, life changes and life challenges, and with that, so do you. When that happens, it sometimes can be hard to remember how you shook that groove thang or why that particular music made your groove thang shake. Yes, I just used “groove thang” multiple times in a sentence…

In this process, I’ve found so many words. I’ve mentioned before that it is a teensy fetus of a dream of mine to maybe someday have the courage to write a book. In fact, I’ve recently wished that there was a scribe who follows me around to put my thoughts on paper whenever and wherever they strike. Because let me tell you, I pretty much still do the same thing I did when I was ten. You know, that thing where you have complete imaginary conversations with yourself or with someone else…or my personal favorite, with an invisible audience. Yep. My name is Kali and I’d like to admit that I have full-blown conversations with myself on the reg. Because if you’re a writer, you know, once you start putting them from your brain to paper yourself, so many of them just dissipate into thin air. I won’t be making feeble attempts to make my imaginary conversations into a book today, or likely anytime soon; however, I do hope to start sharing with you of this journey of self-realization. My personal journey–falls and faults, realizations and successes–that have molded me as a wife, a business owner, a creative dreamer, a friend, and a lover.

In a world that teaches us that “GO, GO, GO” reads success, it’s often so easy to lose sight that in all of the whirlwind of marking items off of daily to-do lists and chasing the direction of pretty painted dreams and mapping out intricate plans for futures (HA!), that we forget to just simply be. To be in the moment, to be who we are, to foster what’s on the inside. Because I’m not sure if you’ve thought about it, but if we don’t , then well, there’s not much point in any of that going or doing or planning.

Restandrecharge

Let me tell you that I’m so neurotic with the idea of “productivity” sometimes, that if Preston is at work and I’m finished working for the day, I’ll scurry around my house and find something to busy myself and feel productive just until he gets home. Because for some crazy reason in my brain, unless I’m doing a “productive nothing” of sorts with another person, then I should be doing something. This is just one example of the false notion of busy that we sometimes put on ourselves in this crazy little life.

So, for those of us who plan for happiness, for those who buy for happiness, for those who love for happiness–which at some point in life, is all of us–I’ve got something for you.

” It’s more than that. Something else needs to shift. Yes, something needs to shift inside of you because the world will never feed you happiness. And another person won’t give you that happiness. And enough purchases or swipes of a card won’t deliver that happiness to your door. You need to learn to walk inside of the footprints you’ve already made for yourself. You need to get back to basics. You need to be worthy enough of that rest and recharge. And perhaps, perhaps, happiness will be waiting for you there.”

Imagine Boutique: Website Launch, Part II

After developing some fabulously mad love for photographing seniors and considering my crush on an ever-changing good outfit, I was thrilled when Imagine Boutique contacted me about photographing for their store. I’m about as girly girl as they come, so a day with a group of girls, makeup, hair products, endless outfits, and tons of giggles was pretty much the bees knees. You may recognize the models, they are two of my seniors from this past year, Callie and Renee, who won Imagine’s model search. Double score. If you missed their senior sessions, you can see them here and here.

I’ve mentioned before about how I truly end up with an adoring heart for my senior girls, and these girls were no exception. They both left me in awe this past year, not only with their gorg modeling abilities, but with their gentle hearts, open minds, and styles all their own.

OH, AND IF YOU MISSED IT LAST WEEK, because we just love you guys so much, Imagine is offering a coupon code exclusively for YOU! From now until JULY 17th, all of my ever-fabulous readers can receive 15% off of your online order with the code “kali15″. So scoot right on over to the site if you’re on the lookout for some new fancy summer pieces and see what they have in store! And for even more up-to-date posts, follow them @shopimagine on Instagram.

Here are a few snippets from our giant photo shoot we had for Imagine’s website launch! We spent the day roaming all over some good ole’ country land–greenery for days, ponds, horses, dirt roads, ah. Here’s a peek at some of our fun from that day.

This was probably my favorite surprise to end the day. This sweet girl let Callie and Renee play and pose with her in exchange for a little grass to nibble on. So sweet…2014-06-17_00192014-06-17_00182014-06-17_00162014-06-17_00202014-06-17_0014 2014-06-17_0015

The owner of Imagine, Meg, has such an eye for perfectly dainty pieces. One of my personal favorites of her eye for fashion is the jewelry she carries in the store–I can almost never go in the shop without leaving with a little dainty gem. 2014-06-17_00032014-06-17_00212014-06-17_00222014-06-17_00232014-06-17_00242014-06-17_0009

He Taught US That Love Isn’t Conditional

For years Preston begged that we get a dog–and for years, I said “no.” They drool, they shed, they make things dirty, I said. I didn’t see at all why I needed a furry friend in my life–I felt perfectly content without one. During his most recent deployment, I agreed to start thinking about it–after all, maybe there were some “cleaner ones” we could look at. I die mortified, thinking back on my thought processes then. I guess that’s how this whole life and maturation thing works…

But now, NOW…I’m not sure how I ever lived without a Chewie in my life. So much that I have talks with him about learning how to obtain immortal powers on the reg.

Chewie stormed in our lives with giant teddy bear paws and big ol’ wet kisses and wrecked our world in the best way. He reminds us both, sometimes even embarrassingly, of what love really means.

He’s taught us that love isn’t conditional.

When he places his teddy bear paws on me and cuddles up close immediately after I don’t love him so perfectly, I’m reminded how he shows us love–of how it’s all he even knows. I’m reminded how my existence in his little furry life is the entire world he breathes–and of how some quality time with a tennis ball makes him more happy than I sometimes allow myself to be in a whole week. That’s just cray.  With him, I’m reminded how imperfect our love is as humans, with our faulty conditions, rugged walls, and ugly expectations we place. He makes me better.

And when it’s all said and done, there’s nothing that puppy kisses and furry pouty faces can’t fix.2014-06-17_0026 Happy, happy Tuesday my friends!

A Southern Summer – Blaire Turns Two!

Watching my sweet babies whom I’ve photographed since they couldn’t talk or walk or even do anything more than “Coo” just makes my heart ever-so-full. I photographed Miss Blaire here when she was only a teensy three months old, and I couldn’t have been more grateful when her momma contacted me about documenting her two-year-old photographs. As we went back and forth planning, we decided traditional, soft, and Southern were all small vibes we wanted to contribute to the shoot. I absolutely cannot be more pleased with how they turned out, either.

Miss Blaire and her luscious toddler lips and those big teddy bear brown eyes just had me melting — or maybe that was the June temps and 100% Louisiana humidity. Either way, I’m swooning and wishing I had a two-year-old of my own to do this same shoot all over again and hang giant canvases all over my walls. When I look at Blaire and this session, I truly feel vibes of Southern summer with her little bare feet and flowy white dress. Makes me want to hop right to the kitchen and get a big ol’ glass of sweet tea. I hope you enjoy little Miss Blaire as much as I do!

I’m pretty sure Blaire is two going on twenty two with her very mature model poses that she struck for us with NO cues. Even brushing her hair behind her ear had me cracking up.

It’s hard to pick just one favorite from her session, but this one below is among them…

Little Miss Blaire, don’t ever lose that sweet spunky persona.
